Improving birth care at Akademiska Hospital

The more data we have the more we want to expose and see
After receiving access to the Era benchmarking platform with comprehensive case mix adjusted performance data including health outcomes, resource use and care process, the birth clinic at Uppsala Akademiska University hospital were able to identify a number of areas where performance was not on par with the other regions. A major obstacle to manage improvement projects had historically been the fragmentation of data and the lack of real-time information about performance with fast feedback-loops. In 2016, the clinic implemented Era Insight to solve this.
Era Insight is a flexible solutions that combines real-time information on case mix adjusted performance from the Era benchmarking platform with additional information from local systems.
At Akademiska University Hospital’s Birth Clinic, ERA Insight consists of the management dashboard, project dashboards and a staff dashboard. Together these dashboards empowers the clinicians with up-to-date information including:
- Overall performance (where are we performing well and where should we focus our efforts)
- Progress in improvement projects with deviation from defined targets
- Early alerts of adverse events and changes in clinical practice
- Information about how patient characteristics and care processes interact and effect health outcomes and costs
You can compare yourself to other clinics. We used to be red and yellow – now we are green. We are going the right direction
Selected dashboards were made available in staff cafeteria and allowed staff to see and interact with data.
Case mix adjusted performance has developed positively since the initiation of the work, with notable improvements observed for many of the most important KPIs. Staff reports high satisfaction with the new system and continuously use it to monitor performance. Management reports a change of culture where fact based discussions has united the staff around how the clinic performs and how to improve.
